Came again at a time when the whole country is suffering a crisis of resources – oil & gas. It is the second article of this year, and I am solidifying the facts why we are experiencing this crisis. The oil gas crisis in India occurred as a chain reaction that started in the Strait of Hormuz!
What is the Strait of Hormuz? – It is the narrow shipping lane between Iran and Oman in which a fifth of the world’s daily Oil and LNG [Liquefied Natural Gas] supply passes. And, as the USA and Iran are at war, the Strait of Hormuz is shut down. Now the oil storage facilities of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Kuwait are full to the brim with 10 days of oil production that can’t be shipped yet. That’s why the top Middle East oil-producing countries have cut down their production.
Why is the Strait of Hormuz considered the most important route for Oil and LNG transport?
The graph below explains how the Strait of Hormuz is just second to the Strait of Malacca and ranks as the 2nd highest shipping route all over the world.
The sudden cutting down of oil and gas shipments is proving to be a nightmare for the global energy system. This has now become a representation of one of the most serious disruptions to that issue. This gap cannot be filled from elsewhere, as there is not enough crude oil stored in the refineries worldwide. So, everyone is looking for the resumption of shipping through this strait. The plan is to recommend a release of 400 million barrels of oil. If it happens, this will undoubtedly be the largest move in the history of the International Energy Agency (IEA).
Hike in Oil and Gas Prices all over the world
The oil market has suffered a substantial blow. Since 2022, this is the highest rise in the prices of all oil-based energy production. And if this crisis lasts for a prolonged period, we will experience a rather abnormal surge in prices along with a crisis in the supply chain. All sub-products like Crude Oil, Gasoline, Jet Fuel, Petrochemical, Natural Gas and Diesel have also suffered.
Asian Oil Market Crash
There aren’t any alternatives to the oil producers that totally depend on the Hormuz Channel. The Oil strait of Malacca has more oil tanker traffic than the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were successful in sending some oil through pipelines. It can bypass those channels.
Saudi Arabia is pumping Crude oil through the East-West Pipeline from its fields to the Red Sea port of Yanbu. The United Arab Emirates also establishes a pipeline. It can transport some crude to bypass the strait. Still, the crude oil supplies are affecting (Refineries in the Gulf have been unable to ship the fuel they produce), and the disruption can only be maintained through cutting fuel supplies. Oil gas crisis in India, along with other Asian nations, became a hot matter of discussion.
Going back to Normalcy
Moreover, some refineries are damaged. A 380,00-bpd plant – Bahrain’s Bapco Energies Sitra refinery was hit, and Saudi Aramco shut its largest refinery at Ras Tanura, which only escalated the dire situation.
So, if the conflict ends in the near future (i.e. unlikely to happen), the repairing work will take much time. And the normal operations will not be able to continue for some time.
No absolute alternatives are found, like restarting other energy infrastructure. Everything is time-consuming, depending on the urgency of need. Oilfields that have reduced production take much time to recover. Loss of pressure results in a long-term reduction in the output.
The shipping charges are also increasing rapidly as there are major chances of further drone attacks. Hundreds and thousands of ships remained anchored at the berth sides of the Waterways. Since the start of the conflict, everything around the Strait of Hormuz has been under attack. So, the situation will remain the same for a longer period. And, the Oil gas crisis in India will also be like that.
Thank you for your time, everyone. Ending an article on a sad note always takes a bad toll on me. But what can I do in the time of conflict and strike? Let us hope the struggle will end soon, and everything will be able to go back to the way it was before!
You can expect more articles from me this year, and I think you will be entertained as usual.
